Trigger point dry needling (TPDN) is a skilled intervention that uses a small monofilament needle inserted into a myofascial trigger point. Myofascial trigger points are taut bands found in muscle tissue. They can form as a result of trauma to a muscle including muscle injury, prolonged postures and improper movement patterns that place abnormal stress on a muscle. Myofascial trigger points are commonly painful with palpation and often responsible for referred pain, that is pain present at a distal site. After a thorough history and evaluation, TPDN may be indicated to treat common physical therapy diagnoses. It is an effective and evidence based technique.
