Dr. Kari Elste is certified in the Selective Functional Movement Screen (SFMS) and Functional Movement Screen (FMS).
The Functional Movement Screen (FMS) is a screening tool using 7 basic movement patterns to evaluate movement deficits. A Deep Squat, Hurdle Step, Incline Lunge, Shoulder Mobility, Active Straight Leg Raise, Trunk Stability Push Up and Rotary Stability are analyzed for mobility, stability and proprioceptive limitations. The FMS is primarily used as a pre-screen tool prior to participation in a sport for individuals without injury or pain. It is NOT a diagnostic tool for orthopedic conditions. Simply an evaluation of basic movement patterns to identify asymmetries, compensations, muscle flexibility limitations and strength imbalances which are all risk factors for future injury. Using a set scoring system, limitations are addressed through corrective exercise. The client is later re-evaluated to determine progress. My most frequent application of the FMS is with youth climbers prior to beginning club training. With corrective exercises provided throughout the training/competitive season and a post FMS screen to determine progress.
The Selective Functional Movement Screen (SFMA)
The SFMA systematically evaluates patterns of movement, thus identifying which patterns are responsible for pain, guiding physical therapy interventions and corrective exercise for the main goal of restoring the individual to Functional Non-Painful movement patterns.
During an SFMA evaluation, the physical therapist performs a head to toe movement screen, then prioritizes an area of focus based on dysfunction and pain. Manual interventions are incorporated to tissue extensibility and joint dysfunction. Then systematic exercises are progressed from the most basic posture, supine or prone to the standing up posture.
